The Maryland state legislature has overridden the governor's veto on a bill that will force Wal-Mart to spend at least 8 percent of its payroll on health benefits, or pay it into a state low-income employees insurance fund. Similar bills are on the way in 32 states (!)
It's satisfying and symbolic to single out the nation's largest employer for some accountability this way, but this problem needs more than a piecemeal approach.
