Catch me on the Brian Lehrer Show 2/22 at 10:45 am

I'll be talking about the new CARD Act which has special provisions to protect college students
among other rules designed to halt abusive practices of credit card companies, like retroactive rate increases, late-fee traps (like moving the due date around from month to month), hidden fees, and double-cycle billing (calculating interest based on last month's balance).

Shout out goes to the PIRGs for tirelessly pursuing this important bill among a variety of other issues affecting college affordability and Americans' precarious financial security.

I thought the substance of your segment on this show was extremely weak and was essentially a "puff piece." No mention was made as to the government's role is this fiasco, to wit: easy credit with schools jacking up tuition with no restrictions. Unless and until there are caps on tuition increases for schools that receive federal monies in the form of student loans, nothing will improve. You can't ask colleges to self-police - didn't work for the financial industry - won't work in education either - so someone needs to step in and regulate this industry even if it means many schools go out of business.
