Death and Taxes 2009
This poster shows where all our tax dollars are going. It is really, really cool and so is the website. It's an easy way to find out that for example, funding for career and technical education was down 30% last year.
Notice how about 1/3 third of the budget goes to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. That's over 1 trillion.
I seriously doubt that will be there when I retire. So I'm not counting on the government anymore for anything, including national security, especially considering the fiasco that was last year in the financial markets and their idiotic response to it.
The baby boom generation has, by and large, devoured their wealth and, through deficit spending and consumer debt, ours as well. We will have to rebuild a new country ourselves from the ashes.
My new book, DIY U:Edupunks, Edupreneurs and the Coming Transformation of Higher Education (buy it here), will be published by Chelsea Green in April 2010. I'm a staff writer for Fast Company Magazine and the author of the book Generation Debt. I've written Generation Debt columns for the Village Voice and as a featured Yahoo! Finance expert. I've also written for publications ranging from the New York Times to ReadyMade magazine and Mental Floss.
I live in Brooklyn with a phenomenal husband and an amazing cat.
