Wow I'm reading Anya Kamenetz's book "Generation Debt" and I am relieved and saddened at the same time. I am 40 so technically I am older than the age group she talks about, but god can I relate. I am 40 just graduated from college after 6 years of struggle and now I owe more than $40,000 in student loans and credit card debt. I live with my mom in a place I hate but don't have the money to go elsewhere. I live in California and I get sick of hearing people talk about their properties and how much they are worth. I would like to go to Europe or somewhere else but I can't with my debt. Or maybe I should take out bankruptcy and high tail it out of here...what the heck, life is so short...My life feels like a vicious circle...I get depressed and I spend the little money I get from student jobs or temp jobs on things like "Vogue" magazine from Spain. Everyday I have to face the credit card companies calling me but I don't have enough even for the minimum payment. I feel like I am a failure and alone after one failed marriage and two coerced abortions I didn't want. My ex got in touch with me recently and tries to help but it's either stay here with Mom who makes me feel down and I hate where she lives... or go live where my ex lives which I like better but have to struggle with him being married again and try to find a man who does want to have kids before it is too late. I just want to end it all sometimes but then I think of my mom, maybe a couple of my siblings who really love me, and some friends who I know still care about me.
