  1. Hi Anya,

Is there going to be a PDF eBook version? I read most of my books on my iPhone (and shortly on my iPad).

    Cheers,

    Anya,

Before you posted the piece on unpaid internships, did you happen to check HP's Careers site? Check it out:

In your assessments and discussions of the educational debt burdens faced by generations of Americans over the past 15 years, it would be helpful to focus some attention on the substantial debt burdens faced by many graduates of professional schools such as journalism, law and medicine. Journalists who might otherwise do good investigative journalism are forced to consier higher salaries in more lucrative infotainment environments or in public relations. Physicians who might otherwise work in general practice in under-served communities are choosing more lucrative specialties, geographic locations and HMO/contractual agreements that prioritize the volume of patients treated rather than the quality of care. Lawyers who might work investigating Wall Street malfeasance at the SEC, represent the indigent through various Legal Aid societies, work in civil rights law, provide legal advice to non-profit organizations or to public service minded bloggers are forced to work in private practice for 10 to 15 years for multi-billion dollar corporations - if they can find any employment in the current economy. These categories of educational debt carriers are worth highlighting because of the uniquely rapacious practices of creditors in these specific sectors, the impact of the forced career decisions highlighted above and the smaller numbers of debt carriers in these categories when compared with college debt carriers, which means there are very few in Washington policy-making institutions who care about their interests IN THE NEAR TERM. All will see the costs to our society and our economy of the current situation over the long term. Arguably, we have already seen in 2008 the costs to the financial markets of not enough of the best and the brightest on staff at the relevant regulatory agencies in Washington due to the survival imperative of many law graduates to seek high salaries at top private law firms in order to pay off massive debt burdens rather than serve the interests of the financial markets and of larger society by offering their talents to those bodies tasked with ferreting out malfeasance in our financial markets. Thank you for your important work, and keep it up.

What's wrong with debt? Nothing, provided it's investemnt. The problem with the argument that all debt is bad is that it promotes stagnation. Tea party slogans about the national debt frustrate the creation of policies designed to make us competitive.

  25. Greetings Madam Kamenetz:

Presented in this lecture by Sheikh Imran Hosein is the core ethos of the Islamic economic system.

Imran Hosein The Prohibition of Riba interest
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iyVR-apZJk

What is there in the Islamic economic system that protects the common man?

1)Prohibition on lending money at interest.

Lending money at interest accomplished two things at the same time: A transfer of wealth and purchasing power from the hands of the borrower to the lender through the interest payments and a transfer of control over the economy to the lender such that the lender gains increasing hegemony over the marketplace.

    2) Gold and silver returned to the marketplace as currency.

Let us define intrinsic value as value not imposed on a substance, value that is recognized irrespective of culture.
Gold has such value in China as it does in Nepal, as it does in Guatemala and Uzbekistan. Unlike the US Dollar, the present world reserve currency, whose value and status has been determined by international agreements such as the Bretton Woods Accords. Gold has not required governmental imposition of value in order to be considered as currency by the masses, it is intrinsically valuable. Intrinsically valuable meaning that people recognize the utility of it; they may wear it as jewelry, use it as a conductor, or recognize it as a scare material and realize that purchasing power of the individual is protected if it is used as a medium of exchange.

    3) Spot transactions are the norm and credit transactions are the exception.

This could be because interest is abolished and so the populace have more spending cash, so they do not need to borrow in order to buy.

It could also be because of:
Question: "Did last prophet Muhammad (PBUH) refused to pray Janazah[funeral prayer] for debtors? "
Answer: "The Hadith in reference and the practice of Rasulullah
[sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] are both authentic. "
    Excerpted with slight modifications from:
    http://www.islam.tc/cgi-bin/askimam/ask.pl?q=10397&act=view

The Islamic imperative is to avoid debts, as dying with debts is something considered so grievous that the Prophet of Allah, peace be upon him, refused to pray the funeral prayer of a debtor, indicating that debt is not a joking matter or a matter to be taken lightly.

I pray thee watch the video and write to Shiekh Imran sharing what insights you may have into the matter: http://www.imranhosein.org/contact-us.html

    Thank you in abundance.
